This work addresses loss and the emotions entangled with grief. To do this, I incorporate mixed media and traditional fiber techniques with found objects, organic material, and hand-spun threads. I relate these pieces and their creation to the transformation from life to death, as seen in the stages of a woman’s life which is a symbolic reference to the nymph, mother, and crone. My working process also relates to the cycle of life. Each piece is delicately bound and shaped to create a changing form that reflects organic materials, such as leaves, petals, and pods. Then, I transform and shape these structures through the powerful and destructive elements of fire, water, and air. This process leaves only a memory, whisper, or shadow of the original shape. Construction and destruction of the pieces emphasizes the brevity of its existence from one stage of life to another. Each piece is meant to capture the beauty, pain, and release that I associate with the process leading to death. My work won best in show at the Adams State University Suspend Exhibition. The prize is a solo exhibition. I have some work to do. I juried my first exhibition today. The show will open next Friday (10/26) at Artworks. I will be giving a juror's talk at 7pm. The show didn't have theme, but I decided to call it "Surface" based on how I selected the works for the show.
